This research report explores how higher education institutions (HEIs) reward teaching excellence through promotion and career progression. The study highlights several strategies that enable the recognition of teaching excellence in academic career pathways that can rebalance an over-emphasis on research and recognise the significant contributions of educators to student learning and institutional success. Recommendations:
- Recognise teaching contributions through enhanced promotion pathways
- Provide clearer promotion criteria and metrics for teaching excellence
- Draw on expert-informed evaluation and feedback
- Build Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) literacy
- Promote academic citizenship and mentoring
- Provide flexible career pathways
- Provide professional development opportunities focused on teaching
- Building communities of practice and networks
